What is traditional acupuncture?
In its’ simplest form, traditional acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body to encourage healing. There are, however, a great many other aspects that contribute to an acupuncture treatment.
- Listening to your needs
- Taking time to understand
- Building trust and rapport
- Suggesting lifestyle improvements
- Making time to rest
- Sharing concerns and worries
- Creating a positive approach to your health
- Having fun
As well as needles we may also use massage, heat treatment and exercises in your session.
In a nutshell, acupuncture is about using a host of ancient and modern methods to help you ‘feel good.’
In many cases it’s an adventure and I invite you to see how it may improve your life.
How can acupuncture help?
Traditional acupuncture is an adaptable medicine that can help you achieve your true potential in a natural, drug free, safe and supportive environment.
Often used for pain relief, however, it is not limited to purely physical issues. The calming qualities of acupuncture also offer relief to emotional and stress based ailments. Patients often talk of feeling more in-touch with themselves or peaceful after treatment.
The British Acupuncture Council has compiled fact sheets of medical conditions with an outline of any research that has been conducted into the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment. These documents aim to offer unbiased information from a wide spectrum of research studies. I do not provide lists of illnesses or symptoms on this site for two key reasons; firstly, strict codes of advertising conduct prevent this and secondly, Five Element acupuncture treatment recognises we are much more than a series of symptoms.
This video by the British Acupuncture Council beautifully explains acupuncture in more detail.
Traditional Acupuncture and you
Time to talk about your needs is important. Each treatment is unique and designed solely for you. You are encouraged to ask questions and take control of your own healthcare. Follow up support is always offered once you start treatment.
Take time to choose
The relationship between patient and practitioner is essential to promote healing. I welcome your questions and assure you of the utmost confidentiality and discretion. It is important that you take time to choose your practitioner carefully and by making contact you are under no obligation to pursue treatment. I offer a Free 15 minute consultation to discuss how acupuncture may help you.
Is it safe?
You are treated by a degree educated practitioner who is registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the local Environmental Health Authority. All needling is done under strict hygiene conditions. Needling is minimal, shallow, sterile and respects your privacy.
I have been practicing acupuncture for over eight years, originally training at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Warwick. I qualified with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree (B.A. Hons) in Traditional Acupuncture from Oxford Brookes University. My other qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, plus a Masters degree in Environmental Sustainability. As a fully insured member of the British Acupuncture Council (MBAcC) and registered with City of York and Harrogate Borough Councils you are guaranteed the utmost professionalism and safety.
Acupuncture pretty much crept up on me out of the blue. I had never had a treatment before beginning the training. There is no story of how ‘after a course of treatment I was inspired to retrain and become an acupuncturist’. It was clear to me that I was nearing the end of my career within local government. Although I was working on exciting and innovative projects, the writing was on the wall…at some point I was going to have to wear a suit and move into strategy and policy, away from my love of working directly with people. So I decided to make a change. As it turns out, a pretty huge one.
Whilst searching around for a new vocation I attended an open day at a small college just outside Warwick, the College of Traditional Acupuncture. Knowing nothing of traditional acupuncture, apart from a few clips I’d seen on the TV, I sat and listened to the guy leading the open day and it blew my brain. It had everything I was seeking. I could be self employed, continue to work directly with people needing help and incorporate the knowledge from my previous life as a biologist.
Acupuncture has taught me more than I could have possibly realised; it is so much more than just the needles. It has taught me how to live a more fulfilling life, whilst having a huge amount of fun with the people I meet.
What my patients say ….
“I booked in the first session and to be honest have not looked back. Alex goes about his job in such a professional way that is to the highest standard. His approach is relaxed, which in turn relaxes you. I would whole heartedly recommend anyone to try traditional acupuncture with Alex. It has and is a brilliant experience that you should try at least once and you will be surprised at how it can affect you!”Owen, York
Thank you for being able to see me so quickly after first making contact. I said that I couldn’t possibly sleep any better… I did! I’ve woken up feeling very rested. The only way I can explain how I feel is imagine watching a movie where they purposely dull the colours and the next scene they’re beautifully bright again – that’s how I feel today. I went for a dog walk this morning and cycled to work and felt every colour so much more vividly.Dawn, York
Finding someone who will give time to listen to your medical problem and how it is making you feel is very difficult. Even more difficult is to emerge from a consultation, however much you’ve paid for it, feeling that the practitioner actually understands you and your problem. When I first visited Alex’s clinic, I was unsure what acupuncture could do for me. That uncertainty was short lived because I was immediately put at my ease and found that Alex was able to listen to my problem without pre-judging or jumping to conclusions. He certainly gave me a good listening to! What is more, the solution he proposed and subsequently put in to place made me feel a lot better in myself as well as treating the ailment. In fact I now understand what holistic treatment actually means and I can thoroughly recommend the experience.Paula, Wetherby
Acupuncture has been a wonderful experience. I was a little sceptical at first, not to mention I’m not that fond of needles but Alex soon put me at ease and explained things to me every step of the way. Now, a few months later I feel calmer. I can’t recommend it enough!Cherry, Harrogate
Alex has a calm manner and actually listens to the patient, so not only have I recommended him to friends and family who have all been equally satisfied, I still go back from time to time, for a system top-up.Robert, York
I cannot recommend Alex’s service enough. I was sceptical at traditional acupunctures’ ability to help but the treatment and speed of my recovery has been fantastic.Mike, York
You and acupuncture have changed my life. You’ve done such a lot for me. Everything I come to you with improves.Christine, Harrogate
